Phaedra, disgusted at their mercenary attitude, joins forces with Calder to raise the treasure for the Greek nation before Rhif and Calder can squirrel it away. Now working as a mercenary guarding cruise ships from aerial pirates, he is shot down when they hire their own mercenary. Landing near Milan, he finds an airfield run by ageing mechanic Piccolo and his granddaughter Fio. Soon, with his trademark red bi-plane ready, he's set to take to the skies again. Dubbed in English with the voices of Michael Keaton, Cary Elwes and Kimberly Williams. Director: Hayao Miyazaki Starring: Michael Keaton, Cary Elwes, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Susan Egan, David Ogden-Stiers, Brad Garrett (Widescreen, Subtitles, 1992, PG, 4 Star) 13:00 Baby's Day Out (Film) Patrick Read Johnson's comedy, scripted by the late John Hughes, stars Joe Mantegna, Joe Pantoliano and Brian Haley as Eddie, Norby and Veeko, three inept criminals who kidnap Baby Bink, the son of a rich Chicago family. But while they are negotiating the ransom, Baby Bink escapes and begins to make his way back home. As the trio chase him, he manages to avoid all dangers, only for his pursuers to run straight into them. The film owes much to cartoon humour such as Road Runner, where falls and explosions are slapstick rather than fatal, while the interaction of the three criminals carries Hughes' trademark quick fire humour. Director: Patrick Read Johnson Starring: Joe Mantegna, Lara-Flynn Boyle, Joe Pantoliano, Brian Haley, Cynthia Nixon, Fred Dalton Thompson (Widescreen, Subtitles, 1994, PG, 4 Star) 14:50 Hoppity Goes to Town (Film) Brothers Dave and Max Fleicher's animated film followed their hit Gulliver's Travels, but suffered almost terminally on its release: it was the same weekend that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and America's film fans had other things on their minds. The plot follows a community of insects of Bugtown, who search for a new home as the humans' appetite for building encroaches on their environment. Grasshopper Hoppity and Mr Bumble the Bee believe there's a haven in the garden of a nearby songwriter, but they have to persuade the others, including the ruthless C Bagley Beetle, who has his own plans. An overlooked animated classic, with songs by Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Loesser, the colours and lines of each hand-made cell rival anything computer animation can do today, while the plot and characterisations match any in Antz and A Bug's Life. Director: Dave Fleischer Starring: Kenny Gardner, Gwen Williams, Jack Mercer, Tedd Pierce, Carl Meyer, Stan Freed (Subtitles, 1941, U, 3 Star) 16:25 The Love Bug (Film) Robert Stevenson's much-loved family film stars Dean Jones as Jim Douglas, a struggling racing driver. Director: Jay Roach Starring: Mike Myers, Beyoncé Knowles, Seth Green, Michael York, Robert Wagner, Mindy Sterling (Widescreen, Subtitles, Audio Described, 2002, 12, 3 Star) 22:50 Saturday Night Fever (Film) The film that sold a million white jackets, took disco out from the underground and into the charts, revived the careers of The Bee Gees and made a superstar out of Oscar-nominated John Travolta. Travolta plays a no-hoper paint delivery boy who comes alive on the dance floor, either alone or with partner Stephanie, as they try to win the $500 dancing prize on offer. But his discomfort may be alleviated by the girl who's just moved in upstairs, played by Marilyn Monroe. As the pair get to know each other, her innocent flirting begins to make him wonder if, while the cat's away, it's time for the mouse to play. Hayao Miyazaki's film is set in the 14th Century, as the harmony humans, animals and gods have enjoyed begins to crumble. The protagonist, young Ashitaka, infected by an animal attack, seeks a cure from the deer-like god Shishigami. In his travels, he sees humans ravaging the earth, bringing down the wrath of wolf god Moro and his human companion Princess Mononoke but Ashitaka's attempts to broker peace between her and the humans brings only conflict. This £20m film became Japan's highest-grossing film, earning $150m in just six months. Acquired by Disney, this is the dubbed version, voiced by Billy Crudup, Gillian Anderson, Billy Bob Thornton and Claire Danes. Director: Hayao Miyazaki Starring: Yôji Matsuda, Yuriko Ishida, Yûko Tanaka, Kaoru Kobayashi, Masahiko Nishimura, Tsunehiko Kamijô (Widescreen, Subtitles, 1997, PG, 4 Star) 13:45 At Gunpoint (Film) Plainview, Texas is a typical American small town, until the Dennis gang from Kansas turn up. Robbing the bank, they kill the teller and, while making their getaway, the marshal, too. Storekeeper Jack Wright picks up the marshal's gun and, more by luck than skill, shoots one of the gang. As Wright is feted by the town and made marshal, gang leader Bob Dennis swears revenge. Will the townsfolk back Wright, his wife Martha and their son, or must he face the Dennis gang on his own? Alfred L Werker's film makes no apology for its debt to the 1952 classic High Noon, but MacMurray, as a mild storekeeper in contrast to Gary Cooper's experienced marshal, is superb as a scared man who nevertheless chooses to do the decent thing and stay and fight rather than run. Director: Alfred L. Werker Starring: Fred MacMurray, Dorothy Malone, Walter Brennan, Tommy Rettig, Skip Homeier, John Qualen (Widescreen, Subtitles, 1955, PG, 2 Star) 15:20 Hoppity Goes to Town (Film) Brothers Dave and Max Fleicher's animated film followed their hit Gulliver's Travels, but suffered almost terminally on its release: it was the same weekend that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and America's film fans had other things on their minds. Director: Dave Fleischer Starring: Kenny Gardner, Gwen Williams, Jack Mercer, Tedd Pierce, Carl Meyer, Stan Freed (Subtitles, 1941, U, 3 Star) 16:55 The Lost World (Film) Claude Rains plays Professor Challenger, a scientist-adventurer who is convinced that dinosaurs still roam small corners of the earth. So he puts together an expedition to venture into the depths of the Amazon, where they are beset by all manner of giant animals, cannibals and geological phenomena that leave the increasingly disparate group fighting for their lives as they seek to find a way home. With Michael Rennie and Jill St John. Directed by Irwin Allen from a story by Arthur Conan Doyle. Starring: Michael Rennie, Jill St. John, David Hedison, Claude Rains, Fernando Lamas (Subtitles, 1960, 12, 2 Star) 18:50 Explorers (Film) Joe Dante's underrated sci-fi film stars Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix. When Ben Crandall's dreams inspire him and his friend Wolfgang to create a giant circuit board, they discover that they've invented a craft that can pass through solid matter. At first, they just enjoy the thrills but they soon find the military interested in their exploits, as are beings from another system who are rather disturbed by the implications of the kids' discovery. Director: Joe Dante Starring: Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, Bobby Fite, Bradley Gregg, Georg Olden, Chance Schwass (Widescreen, Subtitles, 1985, U, 3 Star) 21:00 Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Film) Hilarious road movie featuring Steve Martin and John Candy as an urbane advertising executive and a crude salesman who are forced to become reluctant travelling companions. Director: John Hughes Starring: Steve Martin, John Candy, Laila Robins, Michael McKean, Kevin Bacon, Dylan Baker (Subtitles, 1987, 15, 4 Star) 22:45 Witness (Film) Oscar-nominee Harrison Ford plays detective John Book, assigned to guarding Amish mother Rachel Lapp and her son Samuel, who witnessed a murder in Philadelphia station's restroom. But the killers are after them and the three must hide out in Lapp's community, where Book's aggressive, hard-bitten manner clashes with the gentler belief of the Amish in Peter Weir's tough, Oscar-winning romantic drama. Director: Peter Weir Starring: Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis, Josef Sommer, Lukas Haas, Jan Rubes, Alexander Godunov (Subtitles, 1985, 12, 4 Star) 00:55 Nuns on the Run (Film) Screwball comedy, directed by Jonathan Lynn, starring Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane as Brian and Charlie, small-time crooks forced to hide out in a convent, disguised as nuns, when they are pursued by gangsters and the police after parting their ruthless boss 'Case' from the £1 million he stole from a Triad gang in London. With Janet Suzman, Camille Coduri, Doris Hare and Lila Kaye. Director: Jonathan Lynn Starring: Eric Idle, Robbie Coltrane, Camille Coduri, Janet Suzman, Doris Hare, Lila Kaye (Widescreen, Subtitles, 1990, 15, 3 Star)

The planet's only hope is for Spock and his team to travel back in time, in a stolen Klingon craft, to bring back a pair of whales. The script allows for a lot of fish-out-of-water jokes as the crew find themselves in 80s San Francisco, with Spock's inability to master swearing a running gag, but there's also tension, as the clock ticks down in the future, with marine biologist Gillian Taylor their only hope of finding suitable whales to save a future Earth.
